Youth from Virar revives 2 by donating organs
UNI Nov 24, 2018
A 27-year-old man from Virar on November 22 gave a new lease of life to two male patients through cadaveric donation of heart and liver at Fortis Hospital, Mulund in neighbouring Mumbai.
The donor and his family were at an outing when he suffered a brain hemorrhage. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Virar, where he was subsequently pronounced brain dead. Then, his family (comprising his parents and a younger brother) consented to donate his heart, liver and kidneys.
Retrieved by the organ retrieval team, the harvested heart and liver were expeditiously transported via a green corridor from the donor's hospital at Virar to Fortis Hospital, Mulund, covering the distance of 31 kms, in just 40 minutes.
The heart was transplanted to a 63-year-old retired professional, who was waitlisted since October after being diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy.
This transplant was performed by Dr Anvay Mulay, head of Cardiac Transplant Team, marking 86th transplant at the hospital on November 22 noon. The liver was transplanted to a 53-year-old male from Solapur of Maharashtra, who was diagnosed with end-stage liver failure and was waitlisted since November for a transplant. This transplant was performed by Dr Rakesh Rai, senior consultant, Hepato-Pancreatic-Biliary and Transplant Surgery at the hospital.
