Panel seeks quick updates on transplant deaths
Times of India Oct 23, 2018
Following the death of two patients, believed to be caused by a rare immunological reaction after receiving kidney transplants from the same donor, the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) on October 22 mentioned that hospitals should report unexplained deaths from cadaveric organ transplants within 24 hours.
Based on the expert panel's report on the transplant deaths, the ZTCC has mentioned that hospitals will now be required to maintain blood and tissue samples of the organ donor for up to a month. ZTCC is also considering the idea of HLA matching between donor and recipient in cadaveric organ transplants.
The ZTCC president, Surendra Mathur mentioned that they learned of the organ transplant death a week after from media reports and upon further investigation found that three other recipients who received organs from the same 59-year old, brain-dead patient at Hinduja hospital developed coagulation issues.
