First in UK, doctors perform spinal surgery on two unborn babies
Times Now News Oct 27, 2018
In a first-of-its-kind surgery in the UK, doctors operated on two babies who were diagnosed with spina bifida, while they were still in the womb.
The surgeries were carried out by a team of specialists at the University College Hospital in London after the babies were diagnosed with spina bifida, a birth defect which was earlier treated only after a baby was born. In spina bifida, the spinal cord fails to develop and has a gap in it, causing long-term mobility problems. During the surgery, doctors made a small opening in the womb and stitched the gap. Both mothers and babies have been recovering well.
