Berglund L, et al. - Researchers conducted this study to identify determinants of postoperative pain following arthroscopic surgery of the knee. To identify determinants important for pain management and thus patient satisfaction, they analyzed the synovial tissue metabolism by microdialysis and the correlation with individual and peri-surgical factors. Among younger patients and smokers, a significantly higher frequency of pain was seen after surgery. They also noted an association between pain and length of surgery. Individual factors useful for the prediction of postoperative pain after arthroscopic surgery were pointed out in these findings and were seen to be clinically important for personalized pain management.
