Young adults with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy: A multicenter optic disc drusen study
American Journal of Ophthalmology Apr 17, 2020
Hamann S, Malmqvist L, Wegener M, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective, cross-sectional multicenter study to investigate the prevalence of optic disc drusen (ODD) in young patients with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION). All individuals with NA-AION age 50 years or less, seen in neuro-ophthalmology clinics of the international ODDS (Optic Disc Drusen Studies) Consortium between April 1, 2017, and March 31, 2019, have been identified. Participants in the study were 65 patients (127 eyes) with NA-AION, mean age was 41 years. Findings revealed that the majority of the young NA-AION individuals had ODD. This indicates that ODD can be an independent risk factor for NA-AION development, at least in younger patients. It is suggested that ODD-AION be recognized as a novel diagnosis.
