PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Jun 17, 2021
Muhammad T, Srivastava S, Kumar P, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the factors linked with early sexual debut among unmarried adolescents via analyzing data from the Understanding the lives of adolescents and young adults (UDAYA) survey carried out in 2016 with 15,388 adolescents aged 10–19 years from two Indian states. Findings revealed greater tendency of adolescent boys (9%) to early sexual debut relative to girls (4%). Significantly higher chances of early sexual debut was recorded for both boys (17.2%) and girls (6%) who were school dropouts. Rare or frequent media exposure was linked with significantly more likelihood of reporting early sexual debut among boys compared with those who had no media exposure. In addition, significantly higher likelihood of early sexual debut was noted among boys and girls who had exposure to pornography vs their counterparts. Boys and girls who had moderately-severe/severe depressive symptoms are more likely to report early sexual debut compared with their counterparts. Overall, findings suggest that Indian unmarried adolescents lead a responsible and healthy lifestyle and inquire for appropriate knowledge to promote safer sexual behavior. Multifaceted preventive efforts with involvement at the individual as well as the parental levels are recommended. In particular, interventions seem advantageous to be parents-focused stressing family life education that can avert risky sexual behaviors among adolescent boys and girls. And the public programs should focus on sexual health promotion accounting the physical and psychosocial changes during early ages of sex life.
