Weight status and nonadherence to asthma maintenance therapy among children enrolled in a public drug insurance plan
Journal of Asthma Apr 15, 2020
Longo C, et al. - Researchers investigated if there exists a link between weight status and nonadherence among children prescribed new asthma maintenance therapies, including leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRA); low-dose inhaled corticosteroids (ICS); medium/high-dose ICS; or combination therapy (ICS with long-acting beta-2 agonists and/or LTRA). For this purpose, they built a historical cohort from a clinical database connecting individual patient and prescription data to Quebec’s prescription claims registry. This study involved children aged 2–18 years with specialist-diagnosed asthma. Findings revealed excess weight status as a likely determinant of primary nonadherence among children starting low-dose ICS and secondary nonadherence to higher-dose ICS regimens. The likely potential contribution of nonadherence to higher morbidity in children with obese-asthma was suggested by the findings of this hypothesis-generating study.
