Weight change and mortality and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with new-onset diabetes mellitus: A nationwide cohort study
Cardiovascular Diabetology Mar 25, 2019
Kim MK, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from 173,246 subjects with new-onset diabetes mellitus (DM) from the Korean National Health Insurance System to determine if the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality in patients with type 2 DM may be influenced by changes in weight early after diagnosis. At the time of diabetes diagnosis and 2 years later, researchers measured the participants’ weight. They classified weight change over 2 years into five categories of 5% weight change, from weight loss ≥ − 10% to weight gain ≥ 10%. Participants were followed for a median of 5.5 years. Higher mortality was observed in association with weight changes of > 10% after diabetes diagnosis. Increased risk of stroke was found in relation to > 10% weight gain.
