Vomiting in pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of low birth weight: A cohort study
BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth May 10, 2018
Petry CJ, et al. - In view of the previous observation that pregnancies affected by hyperemesis gravidarum in the mother are at higher risk of having low birth weight offspring, researchers investigated if such risks also exist with less severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. They noted a higher risk of delivering a low birth weight baby in association with vomiting in early pregnancy, even when not perceived to be sufficiently severe to merit treatment. Thereby suggesting early pregnancy vomiting to be a valuable marker of higher risk of low birth weight in pregnancy. In situations where routine ultrasound is not available, this may be of benefit to distinguish prematurity from fetal growth restriction, so low birth weight is used as an alternative.
