Vitamin K supplementation and arterial calcification in dialysis: Results of the double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled RenaKvit trial
Clinical Kidney Journal Feb 01, 2021
Levy-Schousboe K, Frimodt-Møller M, Hansen D, et al. - Researchers performed this two-year double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention trial to determine whether arterial calcification in chronic dialysis patients could be impacted by vitamin K supplementation. They randomly assigned 48 dialysis patients to receive vitamin K (menaquinone-7 (MK-7), 360 µg daily), or placebo. Vitamin K status was evaluated using MK-7 in serum and dephosphorylated-uncarboxylated matrix Gla-protein in plasma. Year one was completed by 37 participants, and year two by 21. Findings showed that improvement in vitamin K status was brought about by vitamin K supplementation, but this intervention did not hamper or alter arterial calcification progression in patients undergoing dialysis.
