Lamb AR, et al. - Researchers investigated if maternal and cord blood 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) relate to maternal depressive symptoms over the perinatal period. Pregnant women (N = 126) recruited for this longitudinal cohort study demonstrated a significant inverse relationship between vitamin D status and depressive symptoms between 25OHD and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Screen (EPDS) scores at all time points. Researchers thus suggest clinicians consider screening women diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency for depression and vice versa. For pregnant and postpartum women diagnosed with depression, vitamin D may represent an important biomarker.
