Vision impairment and risk of dementia: Findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Aug 17, 2018
Davies-Kershaw HR, et al. - Using retrospective cohort study design, researchers investigated if vision impairment is independently related cross-sectionally and longitudinally to dementia in individuals aged 50 and older in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. The results corroborated findings from other countries. Cross-sectional associations were observed between moderate and poor self-rated vision and dementia in England in all participants aged 50 and older. Furthermore, longitudinal associations were also evident over an 11-year period in those aged 50 to 69. These data help establish vision loss as a risk factor for dementia.
