Vascular age is associated with the risk of dialysis or death in chronic kidney disease
Nephrology Jul 19, 2019
Lin M, et al. - In this longitudinal study with 94 male Chinese chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, aged 40–62 years, researchers assessed if the risk of reaching dialysis or death could be predicted by the difference (△age) between vascular age and chronological age. Findings revealed independent association of △age with increased urine protein-to-creatinine ratio and decreased baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate following a stepwise multivariate analysis. Factors that showed independent link with progression to commencement of dialysis or death were higher △age, lower baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate, and history of cardiovascular disease, as revealed in multivariate forward Cox regression analysis. Therefore, the evaluation of the difference between vascular age and chronological age could offer an alternative way to detect CKD patients at a high risk of progression to dialysis or mortality.
