Value of light microscopy to diagnose urogenital gonorrhoea: A diagnostic test study in Indonesian clinic-based and outreach sexually transmitted infections services
BMJ Open Sep 02, 2017
Hananta IPY, et al. – This paper dealt with the assessment of the precision of light microscopy in the diagnosis of urogenital gonorrhoea, compared with a PCR–based test. Based on the data, it was deduced that light microscopy using intracellular Gram–negative diplococci (IGND) and polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNL) criteria could serve as an option with moderate accuracy to diagnose urethral gonorrhoea among males. The poor accuracy in detecting endocervical infections suggested an urgent requirement for implementing advanced methods, such as PCR. In order to determine the poor diagnostic outcome in outreach services, additional research was warranted.
