Uterine fibroids and incidence of depression, anxiety and self-directed violence: A cohort study
Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health Jul 26, 2021
Chiuve SE, Huisingh C, Petruski-Ivleva N, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the rate of mental health diagnoses in women suffering from uterine fibroids (UF). They used the Optum Clinformatics commercial insurance claims database (OptumInsight, Eden Prairie, Minnesota) to find women aged 18–50 years with diagnosed UF (n=313 754). These were matched 1:2 on age and calendar time to women without (n=627 539). Experts employed cox proportional hazards models to estimate HRs and 95% CIs between UF and diagnosed depression, anxiety and self-directed violence, adjusting for demographics and comorbidities. They found higher rates of depression, anxiety and self-directed violence among women with diagnosed UF, especially in those who suffered pain symptoms or who had hysterectomy.
