Using the BODE index and comorbidities to predict health utilization resources in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
International Journal of COPD Feb 28, 2020
Li CL, Lin MH, Chen PS, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, researchers assessed the correlation between the BODE (Body mass index, airflow Obstruction, Dyspnea, and Exercise capacity) index, comorbidity, and healthcare resource utilization in COPD. Hospital’s electronic database was used to obtain patients’ medical records. There were 396 patients with COPD who were eligible for inclusion. Experts identified a positive correlation of healthcare resource utilization with the BODE index during the 32 months of retrospective clinical results. A significant link between the BODE index and the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) of COPD patients was also revealed. There was a positive correlation of in-hospitalization costs with CCI. A positive correlation of BODE quartiles with the number of hospitalizations, hospitalization days, hospitalization costs, and total medical costs, was evident. Overall, the BODE index and comorbidity evaluation was shown to be valuable and could predict healthcare resource utilization in COPD.
