Usefulness of simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index score for identification of patients with low-risk pulmonary embolism and active cancer
Chest Nov 09, 2019
Yamashita Y, Morimoto T, Amano H, et al. - Researchers assessed whether the simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (sPESI) score has utility for patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) and active cancer in a multicenter registry including consecutive patients with acute symptomatic VTE, named the COMMAND VTE Registry. Findings revealed a lower 30-day mortality rate in patients with sPESI score = 1 vs those with sPESI scores ≥ 2 among patients with PE and active cancer. Also, very low PE-related mortality risk was observed in patients with sPESI score = 1, although these patients had a high overall mortality rate due to cancer-related mortality. These patients also had relatively high risks for recurrence and major bleeding, indicating the requirement for careful follow-up.
