Use and outcomes of cerebral embolic protection for transcatheter aortic valve replacement: A US nationwide study
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Jun 24, 2021
Khan MZ, Zahid S, Khan MU, et al. - Given limited outcomes data exist regarding the use of cerebral embolic protection devices (CPDs) with transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), therefore, researchers herein used the National Inpatient Sample and Nationwide Readmissions Database to analyze utilization and inpatient mortality, neurological complications (ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and transient ischemic attack), procedural complications, resource utilization, as well as 30-day readmissions with and without use of CPD. They developed a 1:3 ratio propensity score matched model. This work provides real-world data regarding utilization and in-hospital results of CPD use in TAVR. Findings revealed that lower inpatient mortality, neurological, and clinical complications were observed in relation to CPD use vs TAVR without CPD.
