Urine creatinine concentration and clinical outcomes in older adults: The Cardiovascular Health Study
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Aug 12, 2021
Barzilay JI, Buzkova P, Shlipak MG, et al. - A favorable connection of a higher spot urine creatinine concentration (Ucr; mg/dl) with muscle mass and strength as well as with health outcomes was found in older community-living adults, and it affords a readily available and attractive tool for gauging older adults’ health.
From the Cardiovascular Health Study, 3424 participants were included.
A sub-cohort of 1331 participants had dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scans done.
Greater grip strength and higher lean muscle mass were noted in relation to one standard deviation higher Ucr concentration (64.6 mg/dl).
Lower rates of hospitalizations and lower mortality risk in relation to each standard deviation greater Ucr concentration.
No link was found between Ucr levels and incident diabetes mellitus risk.
