Urbanisation and asthma in low-income and middle-income countries: A systematic review of the urban–rural differences in asthma prevalence
Thorax Jul 11, 2019
Rodriguez A, et al. - Researchers assessed how the link between asthma and urbanisation in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) has been evaluated in epidemiological studies. They also focused on asthma prevalence variation by urban/rural areas. This study included 70 eligible asthma studies comparing urban/rural regions, comparing cities and assessing intraurban difference. As for the link between urbanisation and asthma in LMICs, most evidence was provided by studies comparing urban and rural regions. In urban vs rural populations, a greater prevalence of asthma was reported, however, no information was gained regarding the specific features of the urbanisation process that could be held responsible. As per findings, an approach to understand how various dimensions of urbanisation, using contextual household and individual indicators, is required for a better understanding of how urbanisation influences asthma.
