Unicondylar knee arthroplasty has fewer complications but higher revision rates than total knee arthroplasty in study of large United States databases
Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 13, 2019
Hansen EN, et al. - Data were studied to delineate the risk of complications, reoperation/revision, hospital readmission due to any cause, and mortality of subjects with knee arthroplasty in the US population. They observed significantly higher complication rates for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) cases vs unicondylar knee arthroplasty (UKA) including wound complication, PE, stiffness, PJI, myocardial infarction, readmission, and death. Lesser survivorship of UKA was reported in comparison with TKA at all time points. They also suggested significant influences of age as well as surgeon and hospital volume on implant survivorship while gender did not.
