Undiagnosed HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C infections in people with severe psychiatric disorders in Ethiopia

BMC Infectious Diseases Mar 08, 2020

Ayano G, Haile K, Tesfaye A, et al. - This is the first study analyzing and contrasting undiagnosed seroprevalence rates of HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections among patients with severe psychiatric disorders (ie, schizophrenia, bipolar, schizoaffective, and depressive disorders). They involved a random sample of 309 individuals with severe psychiatric disorders selected by systematic sampling technique. Participants were recruited from the outpatient clinic at Amanuel Mental Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from May 1, 2017, to July 30, 2017. Although the prevalence rates of HIV (3.24%), HBV (4.85%), and HCV (1.29%) infections in patients with severe psychiatric disorders were high, the majority remained undiagnosed. HBV was found to be the most frequently undiagnosed (4 out of 5) infection followed by HCV (3 out of 4) and HIV (6 out of 10). The present study provided evidence of a substantial association in patients with severe psychiatric disorders between participants age (between 30 and 40 years) and chronic viral infections. It is important to raise the understanding of psychiatry practitioners and early screening, as well as chronic viral infection interventions for patients with severe psychiatric disorders.
