Two-stage debridement with prosthesis retention for acute periprosthetic joint infections
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 22, 2019
Chung AS, et al. - Researchers evaluated two-stage debridement with implant retention in the management of acute prosthetic joint infections (APJI) in a total of 83 individuals with a follow-up period of 41.8 months. They noted an overall success rate of 86.7% with 82.9% in hips and 89.6% in knees. They also recorded protocol success of 93.8% in primary joints and 77.1% in revision joints. They noted an average time from onset of symptoms to surgery of 6.2 days for effectively treated cases while it was 10.7 days for those who failed treatment. Conclusively, a greater probability of infection control was seen with this two-stage retention protocol vs earlier reports of single stage debridement and modular part exchange.
