Twelve-year incidence and baseline risk factors for pseudoexfoliation: The Thessaloniki Eye Study (An American Ophthalmological Society Thesis)
American Journal of Ophthalmology May 18, 2019
Topouzis F, et al. - In this longitudinal, population-based study, researchers examined an elderly Caucasian population to determine 12-year incidence of pseudoexfoliation (PEX), baseline risk factors for incident PEX and risk factors for incident pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG) among those with PEX. A total of 1,092 subjects were followed-up for a mean duration of 11.6±1.6 years. The reported 12-year incidence of PEX was 19.6%. The chance to get affected was more for females vs males. Lower odds of incident PEX were reported in relation to higher axial length. There was no link between PEX at baseline and an increased probability of major vascular disease. A greater probability of developing PEXG was observed among those with PEX in relation to higher baseline intraocular pressure and history of heart attack at baseline. Development of PEXG was prevented by the presence of a history of alcohol consumption at baseline among individuals if they had PEX at baseline.
