Trends in working conditions and health across three cohorts of older workers in 1993, 2003 and 2013: A cross-sequential study

BMC Public Health Nov 07, 2019

van der Noordt M, et al. - Given a tremendous rise in the number of older workers over the preceding decades, researchers analyzed three successive cohorts of Dutch older workers, focusing on trends in physical, cognitive and psychological functioning from 1993 to 2013 in these individuals, to determine the contribution of the shifts in physical and psychosocial work demands and psychosocial work resources to alteration in functioning. They used data from three cohorts of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam. Overall 1,307 people aged 55–65 with a paid job were analyzed. A rise in the time required to perform the Timed Chair Stand Test with 1.3 s, to a mean of 11.5 s, was observed from 1993 to 2013. With 1.7 points, rise to a mean of 31 points was noted in Coding Task scores. A non-significant rise from 15 to 20% was noted in the proportion of workers with low positive affect. Findings are suggestive of likely non-contribution of changes in working conditions to improved physical and psychological functioning, however, contribution to some extent to improved cognitive functioning was observed. To attain sustainable employability of older workers, assistance may be provided by further adjustment of physical work needs and psychosocial work resources.
