Trends in the use of cigarettes, cigars, and marijuana among students with and without asthma, 2003–2017
Journal of Asthma Feb 14, 2019
Jones SE, et al. - Researchers examined the prevalence and trends in current use of cigarettes, cigars, and marijuana among U.S. high school students with and without asthma using the national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), a biennial, school-based, nationally representative survey of U.S. students in grades 9–12. During 2003–2017, a decline in both current cigarette and cigar smoking was observed with rates that were similar among students with and without asthma. No significant linear change in current marijuana use was noted, irrespective of asthma status. Students with asthma used cigarette, cigar, and marijuana more commonly than without asthma during most years. As tobacco and marijuana smoking adversely influence respiratory functions, they emphasize efforts to educate all youth about the dangers of using these substances as critical, particularly among those with asthma.
