Trends in mortality related to pulmonary embolism in the European Region, 2000–15: Analysis of vital registration data from the WHO Mortality Database
The Lancet Respiratory Medicine Mar 11, 2020
Barco S, Mahmoudpour SH, Valerio L, et al. - Using data from the WHO Mortality Database (2000–15) covering Eastern Europe, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Western Europe, and Central Asia, researchers analyzed pulmonary embolism-associated mortality as well as time trends in the WHO European Region. From 2013 to 2015, the annual occurrence of an average of 38,929 pulmonary embolism-associated deaths was reported in the 41 Member States with available data and a population of 650,950,921; among people aged 15–55 years, pulmonary embolism resulted in 8–13 per 1000 deaths in females and 2–7 per 1000 deaths in males. Findings revealed declining trends in pulmonary embolism-associated mortality, these trends might indicate enhanced management of the disease, consistent with case fatality data from cohort investigations. The lack of a uniform case definition and alterations in coding practices and performing autopsy might be included as additional, or alternative, explanations. Medical, as well as the societal burden associated with pulmonary embolism, is still relevant. To ensure enhanced awareness and to implement effective preventive as well as therapeutic measures, continuing efforts are warranted.
