Treatment of hereditary hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp with topical gentamicin
British Journal of Dermatology Jan 08, 2020
Peled A, Samuelov L, Sarig O, et al. - Considering that gentamicin has been shown to mediate ribosomal read-through, researchers have ascertained its therapeutic effectiveness in a limited number of patients affected with hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp (HSS) with recurrent CDSN mutation. According to findings, gentamicin improved read-through activity and facilitated full-length corneodesmosin synthesis in primary keratinocytes obtained from patients carrying a nonsense mutation in CDSN. Topical gentamicin therapy was found to partly rescue the hypotrichosis phenotype in four patients with HSS. As a potential treatment for HSS, topical gentamicin should be considered.
