Transcatheter closure of patent foramen ovale vs medical therapy after cryptogenic stroke: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Cerebrovascular Diseases | Apr 04, 2018
Darmoch F, et al. - Among subjects with cryptogenic stroke, researchers investigated the safety and effectiveness of the patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure compared with medical therapy. The mean age of patients was mean age 45 years, with a mean follow-up of 2.9 years. In contrast with the medical therapy, a statistically prominent risk reduction in risk of recurrent stroke was achieved in the PFO closure group, as revealed via a random effects model. It was noted that the I2 heterogeneity test was 48%. Hence, the inference drawn was that PFO closure served as a safe and effective intervention for the prevention of stroke recurrence compared with medical therapy in patients with cryptogenic stroke.
