Total hip arthroplasty through the direct anterior approach using a bikini incision can be safely performed in obese patients

Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 06, 2019

Manrique J, et al. - In this case-control retrospective study, researchers examined 2 procedures for the direct anterior approach (DAA) total hip arthroplasty (THA) viz, traditional vertical incision vs horizontal (bikini) incision to estimate overall wound complications and patient-reported esthetics at the 6-month follow-up. Lower rates of delayed wound healing were reported in bikini cases vs conventional incision (2.3% vs. 6.1%). The statistically significant difference was noticed among obese candidates (0% vs 16.6%). No difference was reported in terms of incision cosmesis between the 2 incision types.
