Total hip arthroplasty improves the quality-adjusted-life-years in patients who exceeded the estimated life-expectancy
Journal of Arthroplasty Jul 17, 2018
Dimitriou D, et al. - Experts reported the clinical outcomes, complication rate, mortality and quality-adjusted-life-year (QALY) of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients that already exceeded the average life-expectancy. Findings suggested safety and efficacy of THA for improving pain, function, and quality of life with low mortality in selected elderly patients, who already exceeded the average life-expectancy. Therefore, patient’s age should not be the only factor limiting the surgeons to operate relatively active, independent and cognitively intact elderly patients suffering from debilitating hip osteoarthritis. However, to minimize the risk of preoperative complications, careful patient selection, surgical indications, and aggressive perioperative optimization might be necessary.
