Topical tranexamic acid in elderly patients with femoral neck fractures treated with hemiarthroplasty: Efficacy and safety? - A case-control study
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders May 23, 2019
Kwak DK, et al. - Researchers conducted this case-control study to assess the impact of topical tranexamic acid (TXA) on the outcomes of elderly patients with femoral neck fractures after hemiarthroplasty. Between January 2015 and January 2017, elderly patients, aged ≥ 70 years, who had cementless bipolar hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fractures were involved. The study group consisted of 72 patients receiving TXA during surgery through topical administration. The control group consisted of 72 patients who did not receive topical TXA after matching propensity. The authors concluded that topical TXA administration in elderly patients with femoral neck fractures appears to be a simple and effective option to reduce blood loss, transfusion requirements, and medical complications following hemiarthroplasty.
