Time to diagnosis of acute complications after cardiovascular implantable electronic device insertion and optimal timing of discharge within the first 24 hours
Heart Rhythm Sep 26, 2021
Wadhwani L, Occhipinti K, Selim A, et al. - In cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) implanted patients, most acute complications were diagnosed either within the first 6 hours or more than 24 hours post-implantation. Discharge following 6 hours of proper monitoring can be considered, with rare exception.
This retrospective cohort study included adults 18 years or older who had CIED implantation (n = 2421).
Pericardial effusion or cardiac tamponade, pneumothorax or hemothorax, lead dislodgment, and hematomas necessitating surgical intervention were diagnosed in 13 (0.53%), 19 (0.78%), 11 (0.45%), and in 5 patients (0.2%), respectively.
Total 48 acute complications occurred; 43 (90%) either within 6 hours or more than 24 hours post-procedure.
During the index hospitalization, intervention was needed for only 3 acute complications identified between 6 and 24 hours (0.12% of all cases).
