Time-dependent risk of atrial fibrillation in patients with primary aldosteronism after medical or surgical treatment initiation
Hypertension Apr 22, 2021
Kim KJ, Hong N, Yu MH, et al. - Researchers focused on the time-dependent risk of atrial fibrillation in surgically or medically managed primary aldosteronism, in this study utilizing the National Health Insurance Claim database in Korea (2003–2017). They matched 1,418 patients with primary aldosteronism (adrenalectomy [ADX], n = 755, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist n = 663) to patients with essential hypertension (n = 7090), based on age and gender and at a 1:5 ratios. Findings revealed increased risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation up to 3 years in treated primary aldosteronism vs essential hypertension, followed by decline to comparable risk in essential hypertension. Performing monitoring for atrial fibrillation up to 3 years post-treatment, especially ADX, might be warranted.
