Thyroid‐stimulating hormone levels and incident depression: Results from the ELSA‐Brasil Study

Clinical Endocrinology Jan 28, 2021

Varella AC, Benseñor IM, Janovsky CCPS, et al. - In a cohort of middle‐aged adults, this research was undertaken to investigate if TSH levels at baseline were correlated with incident depression after 4 years of follow‐up in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health. Researchers assessed TSH and free‐thyroxine levels at baseline, and then conducted depression diagnoses using the Clinical Interview Schedule ‐ Revised at baseline and following a 4‐year‐follow‐up. Poisson regression models (95% confidence Intervals) were built to assess the relationship between TSH quintiles at baseline and incident depression. The data exhibited that low TSH levels were positively correlated with incident depression, especially among women. When restricting the analysis to euthyroid participants, the results were comparable. Also among women, high TSH levels were inversely correlated with incident depression.
