Threat appraisal partially mediates the relation between neuroticism and bulimic symptoms
Eating Disorders Jul 01, 2019
Dougherty EN, et al. - Considering the several studies supporting an association between neuroticism and bulimic symptoms, researchers examined threat appraisal as a potential mediator of the relation between neuroticism and bulimic symptoms. Self-report measures of trait neuroticism, threat appraisal, and bulimic symptoms were completed by 120 women. Bootstrapping analyses supported a positive predictive value of neuroticism and threat appraisal for bulimic symptoms. Further, the association between neuroticism and bulimic symptoms was partially mediated by threat appraisal. Women high in neuroticism may be vulnerable to experiencing bulimic symptoms, especially during periods of elevated stress. The findings suggest that interventions that specifically target threat appraisals may be beneficial for women diagnosed with bulimia nervosa with high levels of neuroticism in facilitating their ability to effectively adapt to stress.
