The utility of plasma vascular biomarkers in systemic sclerosis: a prospective longitudinal analysis
Arthritis & Rheumatology Mar 26, 2020
Mecoli CA, et al. - A prospective longitudinal analysis was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of plasma vascular biomarkers in systemic sclerosis. Researchers recruited a total of 300 individuals with systemic sclerosis who were followed for at least a five‐year period, who at enrollment lacked evidence of pulmonary hypertension (PH) and/or active digital lesions (DL). They collected levels of hepatocyte growth factor, soluble Flt‐1, soluble endoglin, endostatin, and platelet‐derived growth factor at multiple time points and evaluated for their ability to prognosticate the development of PH/DL. The outcomes of this study indicated that that molecules involved in angiogenesis reflect vascular perturbation and elevations at first encounter can risk‐stratify individuals.
