The utility of basic metabolic panel tests after total joint arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty May 14, 2018
Kildow BJ, et al. - This trial examined the utility of routine basic metabolic panel (BMP) tests following total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Additionally, experts aspired to identify factors that could predispose patients to abnormal laboratory values that required medical intervention. Pre- and post-operative potassium, sodium, creatinine, and glucose values were collected along with demographic data, comorbidities, and procedural characteristics. It was determined that the cost containment while maintaining high-quality patient care was critical. Furthermore, findings displayed that routine post-operative BMP tests in patients with normal pre-operative values without major medical co-morbidities did not contribute to actionable information. Subjects with diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or with abnormal pre-operative values ought to obtain a BMP following TJA.
