The role of airway inflammation and bronchial hyperresponsiveness in athlete's asthma

Stang J, et al. - This investigation was carried out among high-level athletes with and without asthma. The goal was to evaluate the long-term airway inflammatory response to endurance exercise in this population. Independent of asthma diagnosis, athletes vs non-athletes had a high occurrence of bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and increased sputum interleukin (IL)-8. Additionally, no relation of airway inflammation or epithelial damage to BHR was evident.
