The risks of corneal surface damage in aqueous deficient dry eye disease: A 17-year population-based study in Taiwan
American Journal of Ophthalmology Mar 27, 2021
Hung N, Kang EYC, Lee TW, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective, population-based cohort study to examine the epidemiological features and risk of corneal surface damage in patients with aqueous deficient dry eye disease (DED) in Taiwan. Patients with DED, as identified by diagnoses, drug codes, and clinical follow-up, were studied using claims data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database from 1997 to 2013. In aqueous deficient DED, the younger age group (< 18 years) had the highest risk of corneal surface injury. Female sex, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases were among the other risk factors. Patients with DED that have these risk factors need special consideration in order to enhance clinical care.
