The rate of incidental atypical and malignant breast lesions in reduction mammoplasty specimens
Histopathology Feb 15, 2020
Iskender Sinan Genco, et al. - Researchers intended to show the rate of incidental atypical and malignant breast lesions (AMBL) found in reduction mammoplasty (RM) specimens and the impact of the number of submitted tissue sections on the rate of ABL. The database was examined for individuals who underwent a reduction mammoplasty between 2000 and 2018. All pathology reports were examined for AMBL (ALH, LCIS, FEA, ADH, DCIS, invasive carcinoma). Between 2000 and 2013, the grossing protocol was to submit ten sections from each breast, and six sections between 2014 and 2018. The evidence indicated that 169 of 5,208 individuals (3.3%) and 216 of 10,340 RM specimens (2.1%) displayed at least one AMBL. Incidental cancer was found in 19 (0.36%) individuals. It was showed that reducing the number of tissue sections from ten to six did not lead to a significant reduction in the rate of overall AMBL or cancer. The outcomes demonstrated that submitting six tissue sections from each breast for individuals > 30 years old and two sections from each breast for individuals < 30 years old would be sufficient.
