The prognostic value of peripheral retinal nonperfusion in diabetic retinopathy using ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography

Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Jul 22, 2020

Antaki F, Coussa RG, Mikhail M, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers used ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography to examine the prognostic value of peripheral retinal nonperfusion in patients with diabetic retinopathy. They involved 78 treatment-naïve eyes with nonproliferative and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The predominance of nonperfusion was not statistically associated with the presence of macular edema or the disorganization of inner retinal layers. In patients with more severe retinopathy, higher amounts of retinal nonperfusion are seen. Findings suggested an association of increased central nonperfusion with macular thickening and subsequent vision loss. Having predominantly peripheral nonperfusion was independently linked to worse VA, irrespective of macular thickness.
