The prevalence of anxiety disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period: A multivariate Bayesian meta-analysis
The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry Jul 28, 2019
Fawcett EJ, et al. - Researchers assessed the prevalence of anxiety disorders among pregnant and postpartum women and predictors accounting for variability across estimates. Performing an electronic search of PsycINFO and PubMed from inception until July 2016, researchers retrieved a total of 2,613 relevant records, with ultimate inclusion of 26 studies. The analysis revealed individual disorder prevalence ranging from 1.1% for posttraumatic stress disorder to 4.8% for specific phobia. Relative to previous work, this study indicates a higher prevalence of peripartum anxiety disorders, with 1 in 5 women meeting diagnostic criteria for at least 1 disorder in a typical sample. Findings thereby emphasize the necessity for anxiety screening, education, and referral in obstetrics and gynecology settings. Around 20.7% were estimated to have 1 or more anxiety disorder.
