The potential value of performing preoperative urinalysis prior to total knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Aug 01, 2020
Johnson DJ, Hansen LM, Smith HE, et al. - This research was undertaken to assess the risk of postoperative complications following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) as it relates to preoperative urinary tract infection (UTI). Researchers examined individuals who underwent TKA in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. Researchers classified morbid events as minor (transfusion, pneumonia, wound dehiscence, UTI, and renal insufficiency) and serious (wound infection, thromboembolic event, renal failure, myocardial infarction, prolonged ventilation, unplanned intubation, sepsis, and death). They examined risk factors for adverse events in both univariate and multivariate fashion. This research enrolled a sum of 203,851 individuals undergoing TKA and 507 patients had a UTI present at the time of surgery (UTI PATOS). This research implies that a UTI present at the time of TKA elevates the risk of multiple postoperative complications and reoperation.
