The mixed benefit of low lipoprotein(a) in type 2 diabetes

Lipids in Health and Disease Sep 19, 2017

Hermans MP, et al. - The goal of this paper was to analyze the cardiometabolic phenotype of men with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in association with Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)), targeting the β-cell function (BCF) and hyperbolic product [BxS], which adjusted the BCF to insulin sensitivity and secretion. Low levels of Lp(a) was disclosed to be both beneficial and unhealthy in T2DM. It correlated with unfavourable cardiometabolic phenotype, lesser BCF, poorer glycemic control, and increased microvascular damage despite being associated with substantially reduced coronary artery disease (CAD). Hence, it was determined that Lp(a)-related vascular risk) followed a J-shaped curve.
