The long-term outcome of trabeculotomy: Comparison with filtering surgery in Japan
BMC Ophthalmology May 05, 2019
Bao W, et al. - In this retrospective, observational study involving 25 eyes of 25 trabeculotomy (first reported by Cairns in 1968) patients and 20 eyes of 20 trabeculectomy patients, researchers examined the long-term outcome of trabeculotomy and compared it with that of trabeculectomy. By Mann-Whitney’s U test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test, patient characteristics and postoperative clinical data were analyzed. While in the series, in terms of intraocular pressure control and visual field stability, trabeculotomy was lower than trabeculectomy, surgical indications should always be determined on an individual basis. These findings provide further empirical support for surgical decision-making, although further research is needed to identify more accurately the factors determining indications for any particular patient.
