The long‐term postoperative effect of the Baerveldt glaucoma drainage device and of a trabeculectomy on the corneal endothelium
Acta Ophthalmologica Mar 10, 2021
van Kleij JM, Islamaj E, Vermeer KA, et al. - In this cross‐sectional, observational study, experts aspired to explore whether the postoperative corneal endothelial cell density (ECD) varies between glaucoma patients who underwent Baerveldt implant (BGI) surgery and patients who underwent a trabeculectomy (TE) over 5 years ago. A total of 34 patients in the TE group and 36 patients in the BGI group partook in the current study. Long-term ECD was significantly lower in eyes that had a BGI compared with eyes that had a TE, particularly in the peripheral cornea. This implies that BGI has a greater impact on ECD than TE. Furthermore, the decrease after BGI seems to continue for a longer period than after TE.
