The impact of social vulnerability on COVID-19 in the US: An analysis of spatially varying relationships

American Journal of Preventive Medicine Jul 04, 2020

Karaye IM, et al. - As risk of health challenges are higher for socially vulnerable populations during disasters due to their inability to access adequate medical care, transportation, and nutrition, researchers sought to determine the correlation between case counts of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and social vulnerability in the US, identifying counties at raised vulnerability to the pandemic. They assessed the “global” relationship between COVID-19 case counts and social vulnerability via fitting an ordinary least squares regression model using Social Vulnerability Index and COVID-19 case count data. In the US, a total of 1,320,909 people with COVID-19 were reported as of May 12, 2020. Of the included counties (91.5%, 2,844/3,108), Trousdale, Tennessee had the highest case count (16,525.22 per 100,000) and Tehama, California had the lowest (1.54 per 100,000). Per observations, the health of marginalized communities is differentially affected by large-scale disasters. They indicated minority status and language, household composition and transportation, and housing and disability as predictive factors for COVID-19 case counts in the US. The social factors that create poor health should essentially be accounted in order to reduce inequities in the health impacts of disasters.
