The impact of compliance among patients with diabetic macular oedema treated with intravitreal aflibercept: A 48-month follow-up study
Acta Ophthalmologica Jun 23, 2021
Angermann R, Hofer M, Huber AL, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for comparing anatomical and functional outcomes between patients with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) with diabetic macular oedema (DME) who adhered to intravitreal aflibercept therapy and patients lost to follow-up (LTFU). They recruited 200 patients and kept track of the time between each procedure and the subsequent follow-up visit. Furthermore, at each follow-up examination, visual acuity (VA) and anatomical outcomes were measured. Compared with patients with good therapy adherence, those who did not adhere to intravitreal aflibercept therapy for DME showed significantly worse visual outcomes. Furthermore, patients with LTFU had a 13-fold increased risk of developing proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Given the possibility of disease progression, better strategies for optimizing the functional outcome of patients at risk of reduced adherence should be implemented.
