The general populations’ understanding of first trimester miscarriage: A cross sectional survey
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Sep 16, 2020
McCarthy CM, Meaney S, Rice R, et al. - Via performing a national cross-sectional telephone survey of adults in the Republic of Ireland, researchers examined the general public’s knowledge of miscarriage. In addition, they assessed their health information seeking behaviors linked with this topic. Participants to this anonymised telephone survey were 967 members of the general public. An estimate of miscarriage frequency was described by 699 (72%) of the respondents, with 28% of respondents precisely estimating that miscarriage occurs in 21%-30% of pregnancies, with 61% under-estimating the incidence. Information gained highlights the general populations’ knowledge of miscarriage, its incidence and associated factors as much concerning as their health information seeking behaviors. They emphasize adopting the topic into existing public health and education strategies for improving the level of knowledge of the general public. This will enable those experiencing miscarriage to describe their experience and expectations.
